What my interest in emotional education is:
Indigenous Education and the importance of emotional competencies in educational curriculums,Tribal programmes, political party constitutions, and how from a Kaupapa Maori ( Maori Values) base we must ensure that our developments, our curriculums, our programmes are transformational.Transformation is implied when we discuss Kaupapa Maori epistemologies, methodologies etc however I believe we have a long way to go in emotional competencies curriculum development before we truly realize the transformational dynamics of kaupapa Maori programmes.
Where I am from:
Kia ora, I am of the Ngaiterangi, Ngati Ranginui ,Ngati Pukenga Tribes of Tauranga Moana, North Island, Aotearoa.
Hi Donna I am trying to apply the principles of emotional education to my work; I have just finished grade 4 and am moving on to grade 5. As you may remember I am developing curriculum on the Constitution of Carcross Tagish First Nation-also that our communities, statistically speaking are in crisis. Our students do not finish formal education and some students do not recieive information about thier clans, about rites of passage, about how to be balanced and well humans. These are the issues my work encompasses; I felt inspired when I left you all; now I again feel a little overwhelmed. I loved our talking circle with respect to our projects...I sure coiuld use more of that. The other issues I have is that there are many gaps in our own information due to colonization. As well some of our documents appear to be flawed-so many challanges.
Hi Todd, you are online now by the looks of things.
I was wondering about Lee's question re messages to the members or the group forum as well? I am still negotiating around our site and having lots of fun but not sure how to address all??

Nga mihi aroha kia koe Donna! That week had a profound effect on me. To watch so many people of tremendous capacity operate in such a spirit of humility and solidarity was indeed remarkable to witness, let alone be a part of. Hopefully this community can be one tool to continue and support what began in Vancouver. I can't wait to come and visit you guys...don't think I've forgotten the invitation! 8-)

Hi my dear friend,
I must say that my soul is still singing from the absolute joy to have spent a few rich days in the company of such a remarkable group of people. Please tell me if there is anything I can do to help you with your efforts. I would consider it nothing less than an honor.
Tena koe e te tuahine, kua pai maua ko taku hoa inaianei ahakoa nga haerere ki te kainga i te rahoroi. I kite i a Graeme ana i korero au mo to taua haerenga ki Canada me nga mahi hoki. A tona waa ka tutaki taua ano.
I took a moment on Saturday night to korero with some kuia about emotional competencies and our abilities as adults to allow rangatahi to become adults. Interesting korero and the thought that generated out of that was" When did we start keeping children, children? - no wonder they dont grow up!!!'
